Brooks pulls away in third, beats Oilers 5-2

BROOKS, AB (October 7, 2022) — Conyr Hellyer (Okotoks, AB) extended his goal scoring streak to 5 games, and Sam Huck (Calgary, AB) scored two assists in his third game of the season, but it wasn’t enough for the Okotoks Oilers (4-4) on Friday night, as the team fell 5-2 in Brooks to the host Bandits.

Okotoks was outshot 30-21 in the game, with goaltender Parker Sawka (Cochrane, AB) making 25 saves in the effort.

Brooks took the first lead 7:58 in on an Ethan DeKay shot from the left circle, before the Oilers responded at 11:45 when Huck fed a puck from the left corner to a waiting Hellyer in the slot, whose one-timer beat Ethan Barwick to tie the game 1-1. Okotoks outshot Brooks 7-6 in the opening frame.

In the second, Brooks scored two quick ones, the first an Aiden Fink wraparound at 9:22, and the second a Hughie Hooker one-timer from the slot off the rush at 12:06. But team leading scorer and reigning AJHL Defensive Player of the Week Nick Wolfenberg (Calgary, AB) got the team back within one with a hard slap shot from the left point, again set up by Huck on a pass from down low.

But after just one power play was awarded in the opening forty minutes, the Oilers got into penalty trouble in the third, and Brooks capitalized, with a Nathan Free goal from the high slot at 7:41 and Fink’s second from the net front at 14:05 giving Brooks a commanding lead on the power play and a 5-2 win.

The teams will meet again Saturday night for the rematch in Okotoks at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available online at tickets.okotoksoilers.ca.
