Game Day: Oilers vs Wolverines preview

The Okotoks Oilers (32-18-1-2) will host the Whitecourt Wolverines (34-14-3-1) for a Friday night matchup.

Last time out.

The Oilers fell to 32-18-1-2 after a tough loss to the Blackfalds Bulldogs by a score of 5-1 Tuesday night. The Bulldogs big guns Tyler Wallace and Brett Meerman scored 5 points a piece in the game.

Rookie forward Hunter Sawka scored the only goal in the loss.

Meanwhile for Whitecourt they are coming off a back-to-back in Camrose and Canmore. The Wolverines won game 1 against the Kodiaks by a score of 6-1. Cooper Smyl and Tanner Klimpke scored 2 goals each in the game.

Game 2 went to the Eagles in a shootout after being tied 1-1 through 60 minutes. The Eagles would win the shootout 2-0.

Previous matchups.

The Oilers and Wolverines have only played once against each other this year; that game went the way of the Wolverines 5-3. Sam Huck and Conyr Hellyer both had two points in the game. For the Wolverines Aiden Long lead the scoring with 2 goals and goaltender Lochlan Gordon made 32 saves in the game.

Standings.

The Wolverines sit 3rd in all of the AJHL with 73 points meanwhile the Oilers sit in a 3-way tie for 4th with Blackfalds and Bonnyville with 67 points. Whitecourt and Okotoks are both second place in their respective divisions.

What’s been going well.

The Oilers do sit 3rd in goals against in the entire AJHL averaging 2.92 goals against on average. The penalty kill for the Oilers has been a positive for the team all year and sits 4th in the AJHL at 84.2%.

Conyr Hellyer and Sam Huck have been dynamite for the Oilers offensively this year each averaging over a point per game.
