OKOTOKS, AB (November 18, 2023) — Following up his overtime winner from Friday night, Sam Huck (Calgary, AB) ended his second game in as many days, shooting a five-hole overtime winner less than a minute into the extra frame on Saturday to give the Okotoks Oilers a dramatic 5-4 win over the Blackfalds Bulldogs in front of 1,045 at Centennial Arena.
Once again missing eight regulars from the lineup, it was affiliate forward and U18 Oilers captain Brandon De Haas (Okotoks, AB) who scored his first Junior A goal 3:59 into the game on a backhander from the net front, after a great pass in front from fellow affiliate Hudson Binder (Calgary, AB), to make it 1-0. But Hunter Brown tied on a power play goal at 18:07 to keep the game 1-1 after the first.
In the second, the Oilers pulled back in front on a Sam Hall (Oldwick, NJ) shot from the left circle at 1:14. Layne Loomer equalized for Blackfalds at 7:45 on a backdoor tap-in, but Brett Huxley (Calgary, AB) then flipped a shorthanded breakaway backhander past goalie Ethan Morrow to make it 3-2 after the second.
Blackfalds took control early in the third, getting goals from Brendan Ross at 6:40 and Hunter Brown at 8:07 on the power play to take a 4-3 lead. But Jagger Tapper (Calgary, AB) sniped a tying goal from the right circle at 14:37 to force overtime.
In the extra frame, after an Alex Scheiwiller (Calgary, AB) save, Huck sped in along the right side and shot a puck between Morrow’s pads to end the game and send the Oilers streaming off the bench.
Okotoks will try to follow up the win on Monday night when they visit Calgary and take on the Canucks at 7 PM. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:45 on The Eagle 100.9.
