The Okotoks Oilers have named their captains for the 2016-17 season as they open up training camp this weekend.
Third year Oiler Jordie Lawson will dawn the captain's 'C' taking over from Connor Chambers who has moved on to College Hockey with the University of Wisconsin Stevens-Point.
Lawson who's been under the tutelage of Chambers and Tanner Ockey in his freshmen season in Okotoks says he's learned a lot from them and hopes to carry a strong leadership role on and off the ice.
“It's an honour for sure, and I think I take from those two the good and bad, there wasn't a lot of bad,” he chuckled. “But I take from them and I'm just going try and do the best I can and live up to the expectation of what those two were.”
Joining Lawson at the captain's table are assistants Carter Huber, Carson Beers and incumbent Trey deGraaf who's been along side Lawson since their days in Midget Triple 'A' with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs where they won a Telus Cup together in 2013.
Lawson says he's ready for the challenge at hand of not just leading the team but also trying to get the Oilers that first ever elusive AJHL Gas Drive Cup.
“It's my last year so I obviously want to win and I'm happy that I'm the captain and I get to steer the boat a little bit and hopefully everyone in that room wants a championship as bad as I do because I know we can win a championship if we call come together and play like a team and hopefully at the end of the year they'll be there.”
Oilers Head Coach Tyler Deis says Lawson has paid his dues coming in and is a perfect for an Oilers team with plenty of veterans on the roster.
“On deciding on who to pick Jordie was the best fit here to take us forward. He is a great individual here and we're really excited as an organization having Jordie leading this team.”
Lawson says he hopes he can win one more big championship before he finishes his junior career.
“I know how to win and I'm going to tell everyone or show everyone that I'm a lead by an example kind of guy and I'm going to show them how to win. I look to Jonathon Toews, he's a good captain, he's not the flashiest scorer but he is captain serious and just their team wins so many championships and he's probably the best captain in the league.”
Lawson has suited up in 104 regular season games with the green and gold notching 12 goals and 25 assists but has registered nine post season points in 15 playoff games.
