DRUMHELLER, AB (October 3, 2023) — A Connor Poffenroth goal a little over two minutes into the game would be all the offence the Drumheller Dragons needed on Tuesday night, as they rode a 27-save shutout by goaltender Jameson Kaine to a 2-0 win over the visiting Okotoks Oilers.
Okotoks was kept in the game on account of a tremendous performance by rookie goalie Christian Green (Boothwyn, PA), who made 30 saves on the night to give his team a chance to win.
With the loss, Okotoks drops to 7th place out of 16 teams in the AJHL with a 5-3 record.
Poffenroth’s goal came after a turnover on a pass up the wall that the veteran Dragon forward intercepted and fired toward the Okotoks goal. It caught an Oiler defender’s skate and richocheted into the net for the eventual game winner.
In the third, with the Oilers on the penalty kill, Kai Matthew forced a turnover at centre ice and scored on the empty net to notch the 2-0 final.
The teams will match up again on Friday night in Okotoks for the Oilers’ first home game in two weeks. Puck drop is at 7 PM with tickets available at tickets.okotoksoilers.ca.
