BLACKFALDS, AB (September 30, 2022) – Despite a goal in his first game of the season from forward Sam Huck (Calgary, AB), the Okotoks Oilers (3-3) fell 4-3 to the Bonnyville Pontiacs in their opening game of the 2022 AJHL Showcase in Blackfalds on Friday afternoon.
After Nicolas Beaudoin opened the scoring just over 7 minutes in, the Oilers responded with goals from Hunter Sawka (Cochrane, AB) and Conyr Hellyer (Okotoks, AB) in the span of less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead with a 10-8 shot advantage.
Okotoks more than doubled Bonnyville in shots in the 2nd period with a 13-6 margin, but Bonnyville outscored them 2 to 1, with goals by Alex Atwill and Mike Cataldo sandwiching Huck’s marker at the 7:21 mark.
In the third, Cole Hipkin broke the tie at 5:50 to give Bonnyville the win. The Oilers outshot the Pontiacs 33-24 in the game, with goalie Alex Scheiwiller (Calgary, AB) making 20 saves in the effort.
The Oilers will complete their showcase schedule on Saturday afternoon at noon taking on the Drayton Valley Thunder, with pregame coverage starting at 11:45 AM on The Eagle 100.9.
