SHERWOOD PARK, AB (October 22, 2022) — Brody Spencer-Ha (Foothills County, AB) scored with 2 seconds left in the second period to tie the game, but the Okotoks Oilers (8-5-2) dropped a 2-1 decision in a shootout to the host Sherwood Park Crusaders on Saturday night.
Both goaltenders stole the show, with Oilers netminder Alex Scheiwiller (Calgary, AB) putting together one of his best performances, stopping 24 of 25 shots, while his Sherwood Park counterpart Max Prazma stopped 29 of 30.
The Oilers’ penalty kill was tested frequently, going 8 for 8 including three separate 5-on-3 disadvantages. The team killed off three penalties in the opening seven minutes of the game, not allowing a single shot on goal in the process.
But Sherwood Park opened the scoring on a Tyler Miller point shot at 13:42 that was tipped in by Jaxson Ruthven for the only blemish on Scheiwiller’s night.
In the second, the Oilers began on their second 3-on-5 penalty kill, and nearly scored on a breakaway from Conyr Hellyer (Okotoks, AB), whose shot was barely denied by Prazma. But the equalizer came at 19:58 when a Kade Turner (Calgary, AB) point shot produced a rebound that Spencer-Ha flipped home from the right side of the net to tie the game up.
A scoreless third period saw the Oilers kill off three more penalties, with Scheiwiller starring again with a late kick save to deny a key scoring chance from the Crusaders late.
After a scoreless overtime frame, however, the Crusaders got goals from Evan Arnold and Ethan Johnson, while Ty Yoder (Tofield, AB) and Hellyer were denied on their attemps, to earn Sherwood Park the extra point.
The Oilers will return home for a Tuesday night matchup with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons at 7 PM. Tickets are available online at tickets.okotoksoilers.ca
