CALGARY, AB (February 23, 2022) ““ Leading 1-0 after two periods, the Okotoks Oilers fell victim to a comeback from the host Calgary Canucks on Wednesday night, dropping a 2-1 decision in overtime.
The overtime loss means the Oilers barely missed out on clinching 4th place in the AJHL South. The team knows it will play the Blackfalds Bulldogs in the first round, but with Blackfalds”™ loss to Camrose the same night, one additional point would have secured home ice advantage for the Oilers. Instead, the team simply requires at least 1 point out of its final two games, both against Blackfalds, to take fourth.
After a scoreless first period in which the Oilers outshot the Canucks 14-6, and lost captain Tucker McRae (Calgary, AB) after a fierce fight with Matthew Brunton of Calgary, Okotoks finally broke through in a dominant second on a Nick Wolfenberg (Calgary, AB) power play one-timer late in the period, in which the Oilers outshot Calgary 14-3.
But the shots were tied 10-10 in the third, and the game was tied when Connor Frost scored off a cross-slot pass at the 5:40 mark. That then set up Jordan MacFarlane to score the game winner in overtime with 58 seconds left on a wrister off the rush to give Calgary the dramatic victory, despite being outshot 39-21 by the visitors.
The Oilers will return home Friday night for the first of their final two games, hosting Blackfalds at 7:00 PM for Fan Appreciation Night. Tickets are available online at tickets.okotoksoilers.ca.
